On arrive donc à Banyuwangi avec l’idée de faire l'ascension du Kawah Ijen par nous même en nous rendant au début du sentier en scooter. Mais pas moyen de louer de scooter à Banyuwangi ni dans cette partie de Java nous dit-on! On se laisse séduire par un tour un peu sur mesure pour nous mais dans les traces bien marquées par le tourisme. On part direct en direction de la plantation de café Arabica sur les flancs du volcan puis cascade et enfin l’hôtel où nous allons passer un petit bout de la nuit. En effet, réveil à 00h30 pour un départ direct. L'ascension n'est pas dure mais il fait frais, ça nous change. Un guide local nous emmène au niveau du cratère, toujours de nuit pour nous montrer les flammes bleues. Phénomène étrange qui provient de sous terre et qui produit d’énormes flammes bleues au niveau de fumerolles, à mon avis à cause de la très forte température. Donc vous l'avez compris, en plus de flammes surréalistes, il sort de ces trous une épaisse fumée très chargée en souffre. Et c'est ce souffre qui rend ce volcan célèbre parmi les voyageurs en plus de son lac turquoise. En effet, à côté des fumerolles se trouvent des dépôts de souffre relativement importants. Alors les hommes des villages aux alentours se sont fait pour spécialité d'extraire ce souffre pour le vendre. Ils doivent d'abord faire 3km à pied pour atteindre le col puis 30min pour descendre dans le cratère. Ensuite il s'agit de rassembler entre 60 et 70kg de souffre en bloc en étant dans une atmosphère horrible. Il le charge sur leurs épaules et refont le chemin en sens inverse. 2 ou 3 allez retour par jour, histoire de gagner ses 10€ quotidien. Un spectacle plutôt intéressant donc.
On suit toujours l'organisation qui nous mène au village au pied du volcan Bromo. Encore une courte nuit à l'hotel puisque cette fois le levé est à 4h pour aller en jeep jusqu'à un point de vue d'observation du lever de soleil sur le volcan Bromo. Le lever de soleil est bien joli, le seul probleme est la quantité de touristes qui y assistent aussi, ce qui rend l'observation un peu moins calme. Mais après tout, nous sommes des touristes aussi ... Après le lever de soleil on nous conduit au pied du volcan pour monter voir le cratère. Encore beaucoup de monde, et cette fois nous avons la chance de rencontrer un couple de retraités francais qui voyage au sac à dos ! Cela fait 5 ans qu'ils ont commencé à voyager et j'avoue qu'ils nous ont impressionnés, ils voyagent à la dure ! A leur âge, c'est encore plus impressionnant.Après cela nous prenons un transport à touristes qui nous emmène à Jogjakarta. On passe une nuit à Jogja puis on prend notre train pour Jakarta, retrouver les jeunes mariés avant de partir sur Sumatra.

It directly goes towards the planting of Arabica coffee on the flanks of the volcano and waterfall and finally the hotel where we will spend a little bit of the night. Indeed, waking at 0:30 for a direct start. The climb is not hard but it's cool, it changes us. A local guide takes us to the level of the crater always at night to show us the blue flames. Strange phenomenon that comes from underground and produces huge blue flames at fumaroles, in my opinion because of the very high temperature.
So you guessed it, more surreal flames, it leaves these holes thick smoke busy suffers. And that's what makes it suffers famous volcano from travelers over the turquoise lake. Indeed, beside fumaroles are deposits suffers relatively high. Then the men of the surrounding villages were made to extract this specialty suffers for sale. They must first be 3km walk to reach the pass and 30min to descend into the crater. Then it comes to collect between 60 and 70kg of sulfur block being in a horrible atmosphere. It loads on their shoulders and redo the way in reverse. 2 or 3 round trip per day, history to win its 10 € daily. Show a rather interesting so.

After sunrise we are led to the foot of the volcano to see the crater up. Much of the world, and this time we have the chance to meet a retired couple who travel to french backpack! It has been 5 years since they started traveling and I admit that we were impressed, they travel the hard way! At their age, it is even more impressive.

We spend one night in Jogja then take our train to Jakarta, find honeymooners before leaving for Sumatra.
